Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Blinds, Shades, Shutters & Drapery on the Central Coast
-
Do you serve my area? Yes! Alan's Draperies provides in-home consultations and professional installation throughout the Central Coast, including Paso Robles, Templeton, Atascadero, Morro Bay, Cambria, and Cayucos. We travel all the way to Orcutt and Santa Maria, all of the five cities too. If you're not sure whether we cover your neighborhood, we do.
Is the in-home consultation really free? Absolutely. There's no charge and no obligation. We come to your home, take a look at your windows, bring real samples, and walk you through your options at no cost. If you decide to move forward, great — and if not, that's completely fine too.
How long does a consultation take? Most consultations take between 60 to 90 minutes, depending on how many windows you have and how many questions you'd like answered. We never rush the process — this is your home, and we want to get it right.
Do I need to measure my windows before calling? No, that's our job. We take measurements of every window as part of the process. Getting the measurements exactly right is one of the most important parts of what we do, and we handle it completely.

What types of window treatments do you offer? We carry a full range of custom window coverings, including roller shades, wood and faux wood blinds, cellular and honeycomb shades, Roman shades, sheer and transitional shades, motorized and smart shades, plantation shutters, custom drapery, and exterior shades. Every product is custom-ordered to your exact window measurements.
What's the best blind or shade for a bedroom? For bedrooms, most of our customers in Paso Robles and Atascadero choose either blackout roller shades or cellular shades for their ability to block light completely. Roman shades are a popular choice when you want something that looks more decorative. We'll bring samples so you can see exactly how they look in your space.
What are the best window coverings for a kitchen or bathroom? Moisture-resistant faux wood blinds are our top recommendation for kitchens and bathrooms. They give you the warm, classic look of real wood without warping or damage from humidity. Roller shades with a wipeable fabric are also a great option, but never overlook a classic roman over your kitchen windows.
What's the difference between wood blinds and faux wood blinds? Real wood blinds offer a natural warmth and are ideal for living rooms and bedrooms. Faux wood blinds are made from a composite or PVC material that looks nearly identical but holds up much better in rooms with moisture or temperature swings — like kitchens, bathrooms, and coastal homes near Morro Bay or Cambria.
What are cellular shades and why are they popular? Cellular shades (also called honeycomb shades) have a unique structure that traps air inside pockets, creating a natural insulating barrier. They're especially popular among homeowners in Paso Robles and Templeton, where summer heat and cool evenings make energy efficiency a real priority. They can meaningfully reduce your heating and cooling costs over time.
What are plantation shutters and are they worth it? Plantation shutters are solid, hinged window panels with wide louvers that you can tilt open or closed. They're a permanent fixture, more like a piece of the house than a window covering, and they add real value to your home. They're one of our most popular upgrades, and once you have them, most customers say they'd never go back to blinds.
Do you offer motorized or smart shades? Yes. We carry motorized shades that can be controlled by remote, wall switch, or smartphone. Many of our motorized options also integrate with smart home systems like Google Home and Amazon Alexa. They're especially practical for high windows, large windows, or anyone who simply wants the convenience.
Do you do custom drapery? Yes. We design and install custom drapes — panels, valances, and layered treatments — tailored to your exact windows, ceiling height, and décor. We work with you to select the right fabric, lining, and hardware so the finished result looks intentional and polished. Custom drapery is especially popular in living rooms, dining rooms, and primary bedrooms.

What are Exterior Shades? Exterior shades are outdoor window coverings designed to block heat, sunlight, glare, and UV rays before they reach your windows or patio areas. Popular for homes in Paso Robles, Templeton, Atascadero, Cambria, Morro Bay, and Cayucos, exterior shades help create cooler, more comfortable indoor and outdoor living spaces while maintaining privacy and preserving your view.
Why Exterior Shades? Exterior shades are ideal for patios, outdoor entertaining areas, large windows, and west-facing sun exposure common along the Central Coast. They help reduce glare on TVs and screens, protect furniture from sun damage, and improve comfort throughout the day without completely blocking natural light.
Why Exterior Shades are Worth the Investment? Because exterior shades stop solar heat before it enters the glass, they are significantly more effective at heat reduction than most interior window treatments. Homeowners often choose exterior shades to improve energy efficiency, reduce cooling costs, expand usable outdoor living space, and add long-term value and comfort to their home without change in esthetics to the inside of their home

How much do custom blinds and shades cost? The cost depends on the type of product, the number of windows, added features like motorization or smart home integration, and the size of each window. As a general range, custom blinds and shades typically run $300–$1000 per window installed, while shutters tend to range from $450–$1000 per window. Custom drapery varies more widely based on fabric and size. We'll give you an exact quote during your free consultation — no guessing, no surprises.
Why do custom blinds cost more than blinds from a big-box store? Custom blinds are measured and manufactured specifically for your windows — not cut down from a standard size. That means a cleaner fit, better light control, more durable hardware, and a longer lifespan. Most customers find that the difference in quality is immediately noticeable, and the investment pays off over time. In addition, you are getting our in home counsel with our years of experience to walk you through the pros and cons along with our extended service warranty.
Do you offer financing or payment options? Not at this time.

How long does it take from consultation to installation? Once you've selected your products and we've placed the order, most blinds and shades are ready for installation within 2–4 weeks. Plantation shutters typically take 4–8 weeks, as they're custom-built by hand. We'll give you a timeline at the time of your order.
Who installs the window treatments? Our own team handles every installation — we don't use subcontractors. The same people you meet during the consultation are the ones who come out to install. We take our time to make sure everything is level, secure, and working perfectly before we leave.
Do you remove and dispose of old blinds? Yes. We remove your existing window coverings as part of the installation and haul them away for you. You don't have to worry about a thing.
How long does installation take? For most windows, installation takes about 15–30 minutes per window. A standard whole-home installation (8–12 windows) is typically completed in a couple hours.
Is there a warranty on the products? Yes. All of our products come with the manufacturer's warranty, and we stand behind our installation work as well. If something isn't right, we'll come back and make it right.

What window coverings work best in coastal homes near Morro Bay or Cambria? Homes near the coast tend to deal with higher humidity, salt air, and intense morning light. Roller shades with UV-blocking fabrics are also a smart choice for protecting furniture and flooring from sun damage. We also recommend faux shutters over real wood in these environments, as they won't warp or discolor over time.
I have a lot of heat in the afternoon — what's the best solution? For sun-facing rooms in Paso Robles, Templeton, or Atascadero where afternoon heat is a real issue, we often recommend cellular shades for insulation, solar roller shades that block heat without darkening the room, or exterior shades that stop heat before it ever gets inside. We'll assess your specific situation during the consultation and recommend what will actually make a difference.
Do you work with new construction or remodels? Yes. We work with homeowners, builders, and interior designers on new construction and remodel projects throughout San Luis Obispo County. We're happy to coordinate with your contractor and work around your project timeline.
